Example answer

Can I get a HELOC if I’m self-employed?

Yes, it can be possible.

Self-employment does not rule out a HELOC. The income documents a lender accepts—and the income it can use—depend on the program.

  • Income: Tax returns or an accepted alternative route
  • Credit: Score and history still matter
  • Property: Occupancy and location need review
  • Equity: Available equity and existing liens

Good questions.
Clear decisions.

Will this check affect my credit?

No. This website’s situation check and calculators do not pull credit or contact a lender. A later lender application is separate; ask what kind of credit inquiry it involves before proceeding.

Does having equity mean I qualify?

No. Equity is one part of a lender’s review. Credit, documented income, debts, property eligibility, location and program availability also matter.

Can I keep my current mortgage?

A new HELOC can be a separate lien, allowing the first mortgage to remain. That depends on the transaction and lender requirements. A cash-out refinance replaces the first mortgage instead.

Can I ask about more than one situation?

Yes. Choose all the relevant circumstances in the situation check. Your summary keeps them together so you can discuss the whole picture.
